The Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori Atta, has on the 29th of March 2022, secured parliamentary approval for controversial Electronic Levy to be passed.
The approval followed after the parliament house considered the bill in its third reading with the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin occupying his seat.
The motion was moved by the Finance Minister during the proceedings, to have the proposal reviewed from 1.75% to 1.5%. This was approved by the house advancing for the bill to be passed into law.
Prior to the approval on 29th March 2022, the E-levy has courted major controversy in the public space, with a strong resistance from the minority in parliament.
Notwithstanding the walkout staged by the minority, the Speaker of Parliament rendered that ineffective to affect the passing of the bill.
The E-levy seeks to impose a 1.5 percentage charge on all electronic transactions such as mobile money, bank transfers, and ATM withdrawals.
