The recently introduced E-levy tax measure has been on top of public discourse for some time now. Just as when we thought the conversation was about to wind down, the celebrities, both movie casters and musicians have also jumped on the conversation trail.
Amongst the many voices heard on social media about the E-levy, Ghana’s heavyweight rapper, Sarkodie’s Twitter feed seems to have garnered loads of attention.
The view expressed by him has attracted diverse comments with other people reading through their political lens. The rapper seems to have shared in the sentiments of those who have raised a red flag at the E-levy proposal, explaining that their disapproval centers on the fact that we mostly don’t reap the benefit of the tax we pay. That is to imply that tax revenues are not churned into development in the country.
He further made a comparison with what happens outside the borders of Ghana where he justified their tax contributions on the premise of direct infrastructural development.
“I pay a lot of taxes outside and I don’t complain because I’m using avenues they made available to make money. (It is only right.) It is not the same here and that is why we complain not because the “E-Levy” is bad. When you are broke, a harmless “good morning” can sound like a tease.”
