Paula Profit: Charlie Sheen’s First Love and Co-Parent

Most people that recognize the name Charlie Sheen know him from decades of headlines: sitcoms, scandals, tabloid covers. Less see that his first real relationship, when he was still a teen using his birth name, would define the rest of his family life for well, ever. It was a relationship with Paula Profit, and unlike virtually everyone else involved in Sheen’s saga, she opted to remain in the shadows.

Here is what is actually on record about her, her life with Sheen, and what she did when she moved on.

Who Is Paula Profit?

Paula Profit was born on 27 March 1965 in California. She and Charlie Sheen (who was born Carlos Irwin Estevez) crossed paths as seniors at Santa Monica High School in the early ’80s — oh so long before he’d booked a film role. Like many high school relationships, theirs progressed quickly; unlike most, it eventually created a lifelong bond uniting two families.

In his own memoir, Sheen has spoken about this phase, describing that Paula’s mother lived in a two bedroom apartment near their school and he confesses with brutal honesty that he and Paula hadn’t exactly lived by the rules when it came to birth control.

Becoming a Parent at Nineteen

This lack of caution resulted in a pregnancy a few months after graduation. Paula had a daughter, Cassandra Jade Estevez (Charlie Sheen’s first child), on December 12, 1984, when both of them were nineteen.

Sheen has stated that he was not present for the birth, something he has since said he truly regrets, but became more involved in their daughter’s life a few months later.

The Decision Not to Marry

He and Paula decided not to marry simply because of the pregnancy, which meant Paula took on primary responsibility for raising Cassandra while the two worked out their own version of co-parenting. That choice gave her a level of independence in raising her daughter that a rushed marriage likely wouldn’t have.

A Notable Family Connection

Cassandra also became the first grandchild of veteran actor Martin Sheen, Charlie’s father, and the family’s connection to the Sheen and Estevez line would outlast her relationship with Charlie himself.

A Co-Parenting Relationship That Stayed Out of Court and Out of the Press

What’s striking—in hindsight now that we’ve seen Sheen’s later, far more public relationships, including with Denise Richards and Brooke Mueller, etc.—is that Paula and Charlie conducted themselves so discreetly after they parted ways in the mid-80s. There is no sign of a messy custody battle playing out in the press, no dueling statements to the tabloids. According to most, they were just colleagues.

Sheen has said warm things about Paula in the years. He called her ‘tough’ (a word he also used to describe his own father). From a man whose public life has been anything but drama-free, that type of comment says a lot about the respect that extended from their teenage relationship to actual co-parenting.

Keeping Cassandra Out of the Tabloids

As Sheen’s career took off and his personal life became a fixture of entertainment news, Paula made a clear, consistent choice: keep their daughter’s childhood private. Cassandra didn’t grow up in gossip columns or reality TV segments, which is genuinely unusual for a child of someone as constantly covered as Charlie Sheen.

One of the only times Cassandra appeared in public coverage at all was in 2010, when Sheen walked her down the aisle at her wedding. Even that moment was brief and low key, fitting with how the family generally operated.

Building a Career of Her Own

Paula Profit did not let her adulthood be defined by being the ex of someone famous. She established a professional identity for herself, mainly in business as opposed to showbiz.

Jackson Clay, Inc.

In 2002, she and Martin Sheen founded Jackson Clay, Inc., a company based on children’s clothing. The fact that she went into business with her daughter’s grandfather says something about how the two sides of the family maintained a relationship long after Paula and Charlie’s romance ended.

Other Ventures

She also has been associated with another company, J-Play Worldwide, Inc., but details about that company are scarce. One thing is for sure, no matter what else may be true about her personal life, the trend is the same; she created her own professional identity and did not rely on her early relationship with Charlie Sheen to create visibility.

Why So Little Else Is Known

Paula has not maintained a confirmed public social media presence, and there is very little verified information about her life beyond her family history and business endeavors, mostly because she has kept it that way intentionally. A later marriage to a man by the name of Jokton Speert is mentioned in some sources, but that piece of information is not nearly as consistently corroborated as the rest of her story, so it’s best to take that with a grain of salt. All the figures I’ve seen online about her net worth belong to that category: guesses that could or could not be right, not actual facts.

A Different Kind of Hollywood Story

For Paula Profit, a relationship with Charlie Sheen could have been another chapter of tabloid fodder. Instead, she used it as a jumping off point and created something independent: a healthy co-parenting relationship, a daughter kept mostly out of the spotlight, and a career developed with Martin Sheen, not off of Charlie’s name. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about a family that has lived their entire lives in the spotlight is that she chose to remain private.
